A Lakeside Villa and Komponierhäuschen

In 1899, Gustav Mahler purchases 751 square fathoms (about 2,700 m²) of lakeside land in Maiernigg at a price of 3,755 guilders from the Prince of Orsini and Rosenberg. He also rents a wooded hill above the plot of land in order to build himself a refuge in which he can work undisturbed.
In the summer of 1901, the lakeside villa, designed by the architect Theuer in accordance with Mahler´s specifications, is ready for occupation. The Komponierhäuschen (composing cottage), which Mahler calls his "study", has already been completed the year before. Until 1907, the year in which his daughter Maria dies, this cottage of Mahler´s is the only place where he composes. After Maria´s death, he never enters the villa and Komponierhäuschen again.
The villa is sold in 1908.
